Godikwe Heronry

Godikwe Heronry is a significant avian breeding site located within the Okavango Delta, Botswana, specifically in a large circular ox-bow lagoon. It is situated approximately 6 kilometers from Kwara Camp and 18 kilometers from Xakanaxa, requiring about an hour and a half boat trip to reach. The heronry is characterized by several islands in the middle of the lagoon, dominated by large Sycamore Fig trees and dense banks of Papyrus growing in the shallow water. These islands have formed over many years from accumulated bird guano and detritus, creating a safe haven for birdlife, isolated from non-aquatic predators.The heronry is renowned as one of the most important breeding sites for the Okavango Delta and the wider region's birdlife, attracting thousands of birds, including Herons, Ibises, Egrets, and Storks, to gather and breed during the summer months. It is particularly well-known for species such as yellow-billed storks, African openbills, marabou storks, grey herons, African darters, and even Pink-backed Pelicans. The best time to visit for observing nest building is typically September, with chicks hatching in November. This timing coincides with the lowest water levels, making it easier for the parent birds to catch fish to feed their young. The birds at Godikwe have become habituated to the presence of boats and people, allowing for close observation and excellent photographic opportunities as they feed chicks, tend to nests, and ward off predators.Godikwe Heronry is a popular destination for birding safaris and is accessible via boat trips from various camps and boat stations in the Moremi Game Reserve and Kwara Concession, such as Mboma Boat Station and lodges like Camp Moremi, Xakanaxa Camp, and Camp Okuti. Its diverse habitat, combining permanent water and seasonal floodplains, supports a wide variety of bird species throughout the year, with peak activity during the breeding season.
