Mikindani Estate

Mikindani Estate is a suburban area located within the Jomvu Constituency of Mombasa, Kenya. Situated along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway (A109 road) and bordered by the Indian Ocean, its name is believed to originate from "mikinda," referring to young coconut palms that once grew abundantly in the region. The estate has experienced significant population growth, driven by industrialization on the mainland, leading to notable advancements in transport, communication, business, and overall infrastructure since the early 1990s.The estate is comprised of several subdivision areas or villages, including Kwa Mwanzia, Amani, Kwa Ngombe, Ganahola, Kwashee Staff, Kijiweni, and Aldina. Among these, Ganahola is particularly notable as the smallest in size but the largest in human population, stretching from 'Corner Ya Kwashee' to 'Kwa Hussein Beach' and encompassing various sub-station names. Mikindani is a cosmopolitan area, with a diverse ethnic population, predominantly Swahili. This cultural mix is reflected in its religious landscape, which includes six mosques, St. Mathias Mulumba Catholic Church, St Mark's Anglican Church, a Jehovah's Witnesses Hall, PCEA Mikindani Church, Deliverance Church Mikindani, and several other Pentecostal churches.In terms of resources and services, Mikindani Estate prioritizes education, offering several preparatory schools, three government primary schools (Amani, Mikindani, and Kwashee), and private institutions like St. Kevin Hill Schools and Golden Key School. Higher education is supported by Kajembe High School and two technical training centers: Islamic Teachers Training College and Mikindani Youth Polytechnic. Health services are provided through facilities such as the municipal clinic, Latullah medical center, Mikindani Medical, Joy medical center, and a Catholic Church Dispensary that also offers VCT services. The estate also hosts administrative offices, including the chiefs office, the surveyors department, and the CDF office, and is home to organizations like Hope World Wide Kenya and children's homes such as Baobab Family Children's Home and Grandsons of Abraham Rescue Centre.
