Berg River Estuary

The Berg River Estuary, situated in the Western Cape of South Africa, is a vital ecological area where the Berg River flows into St Helena Bay near the town of Velddrif. Spanning approximately 1,162.8 hectares, it holds the distinction of being one of only four perennial estuaries along the arid west coast of Southern Africa. This extensive wetland was officially designated as South Africa's 28th Ramsar Site, a wetland of international importance, on February 2, 2022, underscoring its global ecological significance. The estuary and its floodplain stretch 40 kilometers inland, presenting a rich mosaic of habitats including mudflats, reedbeds, sandy beaches, strandveld, riverine channels, ephemeral pans, commercial saltpans, riparian marshes, and saltmarshes, notably featuring the third-largest saltmarsh on the Cape Coast.This diverse environment makes the Berg River Estuary a critical haven for wildlife, particularly birds. It is recognized as an Important Birding Area (IBA), hosting between 210 and 250 species of waterbirds, with 25 of these being nationally important. Birdwatchers can observe large numbers of Palaearctic migrant waders and terns, such as the Eurasian Curlew, Marsh Sandpiper, Bar-tailed Godwit, and Little Tern, alongside resident flamingos, spoonbills, pelicans, and the globally threatened Cape cormorant. The mudflats within the estuary boast the highest density of waders along the entire east Atlantic seaboard. Beyond avian life, the estuary serves as a crucial nursery for up to 80% of local fish species, including endangered white steenbras and white stumpnose. Unique flora, such as waterblommetjie, soutbos, sareegras, ruppia, and the vulnerable eelgrass Zostera capensis, further contribute to its biodiversity.The Berg River Estuary offers a range of activities for visitors, from serene river cruises and various water sports like kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddling, to diverse fishing opportunities including riverbank, surf, and deep-sea angling. Picnics are also popular, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty. The area is also culturally significant, with the nearby town of Velddrif being a hub for the traditional "bokkoms" (dried fish) industry, centered around the historic Bokkom Laan, a recognized Heritage site. Salt production is another key industry in Velddrif, highlighting the interplay between human activity and the natural environment of this remarkable estuary.
