Chisimba Falls

Chisimba Falls is a captivating natural landmark located in Zambia's Northern Province, approximately 33 kilometers west of Kasama along the Kasama-Mporokoso Road. It is a complex of three distinct waterfalls fed by the Luombe River. The series includes the upper Mutumuna Falls, which drops about 20 meters, the middle Kaela Rapids, with a descent of approximately 10 meters, and the main Chishimba Falls, featuring an impressive 30-meter drop. The total vertical drop across the three falls is around 60 meters.The area surrounding Chisimba Falls is characterized by lush mist forests and wide granite cliff faces, providing a habitat for various birds and other wildlife. Visitors can explore numerous trails and utilize several gazebos that offer excellent vantage points for viewing each of the falls. The site also provides facilities for camping and picnics, making it a suitable destination for outdoor activities.Beyond its natural beauty, Chisimba Falls holds profound cultural and historical significance. It is revered by the local Bemba people as one of their most sacred places of power, believed to be home to the nature spirit Chishimba, who resides in a cave behind the falls. This cave is considered a place of prayer and honor, where arrogance, quarreling, insults, curses, and words of vengeance or hatred are strictly forbidden. Archaeological evidence, including kilns, smelting pipes, and iron ore deposits, indicates Iron Age activities in the surrounding land, suggesting a long history of human presence. Additionally, a hydroelectric power station at the falls contributes to providing electricity to Kasama and nearby communities.
