Lake Babati

Lake Babati is a charming freshwater lake situated in the Manyara Region of northern Tanzania, approximately 150 kilometers south of Arusha, near the town of Babati. It lies to the west of the Great Rift Valley, nestled amidst undulating hills and lush vegetation, offering picturesque landscapes and a tranquil environment. The lake's coordinates are approximately 4°15′S 35°44′E.The lake covers an area of about 21 square kilometers, with some sources suggesting up to 60 square kilometers, spanning a maximum length of 10 kilometers and a width of 3 kilometers. Its maximum depth is around 5 meters. Lake Babati is renowned for its significant population of hippos, although recent droughts have led to a decrease in sightings. It is also a haven for bird enthusiasts, hosting a variety of species such as pelicans, cormorants, and herons. The waters are rich in fish, including tilapia and Nile perch.Popular activities at Lake Babati include birdwatching, fishing, and boat trips, which allow visitors to explore its serene surroundings. The scenic beauty also makes it an excellent spot for photography, picnicking, and simply relaxing by the water. The lake holds significant socioeconomic importance, providing a critical water supply for approximately 100,000 residents.
