Blantyre

Blantyre is Malawi's commercial and financial hub, and its second-largest city, serving as the capital of the Southern Region and Blantyre District. Located in the Shire Highlands, it sits at an altitude of approximately 1150 meters above sea level and covers an area of about 250 square kilometers. The city is a vital transport node, offering road, rail, and air connections to all parts of Malawi and neighboring countries. Its geographical position is 35° east of the Greenwich Meridian and 15° 42' south of the Equator.The city's topography is varied and hilly, with elevations ranging from approximately 780 to 1,612 meters above sea level. Numerous hills define the landscape, acting as headwaters for several rivers and streams that form the city's natural drainage system. Blantyre is surrounded by prominent mountains such as Soche, Ndirande, Chiradzulu, and Michiru, the latter forming part of the Michiru Mountain Conservation Area. The climate is classified as a tropical savanna, characterized by a distinct rainy season from November to April and a dry season from May to October.Founded in 1876 by Scottish missionaries, Blantyre was named after the birthplace of the explorer Dr. David Livingstone. It holds the distinction of being one of the oldest urban centers in East, Central, and Southern Africa, boasting a rich historical and cultural heritage. The city gained British consular station status in 1883 and became Malawi's oldest municipality by 1895. In 1956, it merged with the nearby town of Limbe, and was officially declared a city on Independence Day in 1966. Key historical landmarks include Mandala House, recognized as the oldest building in Malawi, and the architecturally significant St. Michael and All Angels Church.
