Sesriem

Sesriem is a small settlement and the primary gateway to the Namib-Naukluft National Park, located in the Hardap Region of Namibia, near the southern end of the Naukluft Mountains. It serves as the main access point for visitors heading to the renowned Sossusvlei, Deadvlei, and the towering red sand dunes of the Namib Desert. The area is approximately 334 km from Windhoek and 60 km from Sossusvlei itself. Sesriem is essentially a service hub, offering basic amenities such as a filling station and a shop, catering to travelers exploring the surrounding desert landscape.A key natural feature of the area is the Sesriem Canyon, situated about 4 km from the settlement. This impressive gorge, carved over millions of years by the Tsauchab River, stretches approximately one kilometer in length and plunges to depths of 30 to 40 meters. It is one of the few places in the region that retains water year-round, especially after good rains, making it a vital water source for local wildlife. The canyon is narrow in places, offering a unique walking experience through its stunning rock formations. The name "Sesriem" is Afrikaans for "six rawhide thongs," a reference to the six leather straps early pioneers had to tie together to reach the water at the bottom of the canyon.The Sesriem Campsite, operated by Namibia Wildlife Resorts, is a prominent accommodation option within the Namib-Naukluft Reserve, offering 44 well-spaced campsites shaded by ancient camel thorn trees, along with 6 overflow sites. Staying at the campsite provides early access to the park, allowing visitors to experience the spectacular sunrises over the Namib dunes. Activities available include exploring Sesriem Canyon, visiting Sossusvlei and Elim Dune, and guided drives. The broader area supports diverse desert wildlife, including oryx, springbok, various birds, beetles, lizards, and occasionally baboons, jackals, hyenas, cheetahs, and ostriches.
