Sesriem Canyon

Sesriem Canyon is a significant natural gorge located approximately 4.5 kilometers from the entrance gate of the Namib-Naukluft National Park in Namibia. Carved over millions of years by the Tsauchab River, which eventually ends its course in Sossusvlei, the canyon is a striking geological feature in the arid Namib Desert. It stretches about 1 kilometer in length and reaches depths of 30-40 meters, with some sections being as narrow as two meters. The canyon's name, "Sesriem," is Afrikaans for "six rawhide thongs." This name originated from early Afrikaans explorers and settlers, including those on the Dorsland Trek, who had to tie together six lengths of leather straps (riem) to create a rope long enough to lower buckets and draw water from the pools within the canyon. This historical context highlights the canyon's crucial role as a vital water source in an otherwise extremely dry landscape, making it an important stopping point for travelers and their animals.Geologically, Sesriem Canyon offers a fascinating insight into the region's past.
