Kaokoland

Kaokoland, now officially known as the Kunene Region, is a vast and largely untamed geographical area located in the far northwest of Namibia. It extends from the Hoanib River southwards to the Kunene River, which forms the natural border with Angola. The region spans over 40,000 square kilometers, with the broader Kunene Region covering 115,293 square kilometers, making it one of the wildest and least populated areas in Namibia.The terrain is predominantly dry and rocky, particularly in the south where it borders the Namib Desert, but it is also characterized by mountainous landscapes, including the Baynes Mountains (reaching 2039 m), Otjihipa Mountains, and Hartmann Mountains. Despite its arid nature, the region is home to several rivers and spectacular waterfalls, such as the Ruacana Falls (120 m high, 700 m wide) and the Epupa Falls, both fed by the Kunene River. The northern parts feature greener valleys like Marienfluss and Hartmann Valley, offering striking contrasts to the desolate plains.Kaokoland is renowned for its unique desert-adapted wildlife, most notably the desert elephants, which have evolved shorter legs and specific behaviors to thrive in this harsh environment, traveling up to 200 km in search of water and rarely damaging trees. Other species include reintroduced black rhinos, oryxes, kudus, springboks, ostriches, giraffes, mountain zebras, and elusive desert lions. The region is also culturally significant as the homeland of the Himba people, a semi-nomadic pastoralist group known for their traditional lifestyle, red ochre skin, and ornate hairstyles. Opuwo serves as the main settlement and capital of the Kunene Region, where Himba culture is prominent.Tourism has developed in Kaokoland, offering adventurous activities such as 4x4 off-road driving through challenging mountain passes like Van Zyl's Pass, trekking, rafting, and visiting traditional Himba villages. The dramatic landscapes, cultural encounters, and the opportunity to track unique wildlife make Kaokoland an appealing destination for those seeking an off-the-beaten-track experience.
