Foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro

The Kilimanjaro Foothills, situated between 1400 and 2200 meters, offer a lush and vibrant landscape that contrasts sharply with the broader African savanna. This region is characterized by a rainforest belt encircling the mountain's flanks, providing a rich diversity of vegetation and creating a complex tableau of greens across the slopes. Numerous watercourses carve dozens of valleys, with streams converging into rivers, sometimes forming majestic waterfalls, or splitting into small, hand-cut channels used for centuries by local farmers for crop irrigation. Morning mists frequently envelop the rainforest, creating a magical ambiance before dissipating under the intense tropical sun.This area provides outstanding views of Moshi Town to the south, the African savanna to the east and north, and the majestic Mount Meru to the west. It is the traditional living place of the Chagga people, whose life unfolds along the ridges and deep valleys crisscrossed by footpaths. Women carry loads of sticks, grass, or bananas, while children in brightly colored uniforms attend school. The men often engage in deep discussions, using the widely spoken Chagga language. Traditional Chagga homes, once small conical huts shared with domestic animals, have largely been replaced by rectangular houses made of bricks or cinder blocks, surrounded by natural hedges for privacy and security.The foothills are a place where few tourists venture, maintaining an authentic Tanzanian experience.
