Malealea

Malealea is a village and a prominent eco-adventure destination located in the Makhomalong Valley, in the Mafeteng district of southern Lesotho. Situated approximately 80 kilometers from Maseru, the area lies within the lowlands of the country, yet at an elevation of around 1,800 meters (5,900 feet). The valley is characterized by its green, mountainous terrain, vast rolling hills, and indigenous aloe plants. Key natural features include the Pitseng gorge, the Makhaleng River, and the 40-meter-high Botsoela Waterfall. The tranquil environment is home to various birds and crickets, with donkeys and grazing sheep also present in the rural landscape.Historically, Malealea's origins trace back to 1905 when an Englishman, Mervyn Smith, established a trading station that became the nucleus for the growing village. This trading post was later acquired in 1986 by Mick and Di Jones, who gradually transformed it into the Malealea Lodge, a central hub for tourism in the region. The area offers a rich array of activities, including guided hiking, pony trekking, and mountain biking through the Maluti Mountains. Visitors can embark on excursions to the Botsoela Waterfall and explore the Tohlong cave paintings, ancient San artworks dating back approximately 1000 years, depicting hunting and daily life.Cultural immersion is a significant aspect of the Malealea experience. Guests can participate in guided village walks and community excursions, fostering interaction with the local Basotho people. Evenings at Malealea Lodge often feature performances by local choirs and the neo-traditional band Sotho Sounds, who play music using instruments crafted from recycled materials. The Malealea Development Trust, a community-run non-profit, operates from the lodge, focusing on improving health, education, and environmental conditions, and promoting community involvement in tourism, ensuring that tourism benefits the local population.
