Maletsunyane Falls

Maletsunyane Falls is a majestic single-drop waterfall located in the Southern African country of Lesotho, approximately 75 miles (121 km) southeast of the capital, Maseru. Situated near the misty hilltop village of Semonkong, whose name translates to "Place of Smoke" due to the spray generated by the falls, it plunges 192 meters (630 feet) into a spectacular gorge. The waterfall is fed by the Maletsunyane River and cascades from a ledge of Triassic-Jurassic basalt, creating a thunderous sound that local legend attributes to the wailing of drowned individuals.The falls are nestled in the heart of Lesotho's Central Highlands, a rugged inland region characterized by mountains largely devoid of trees, sloping valleys, and traditional thatched-roof huts. Access to this area involves navigating magnificent mountain passes, such as the Paradise Pass and God Help Me Pass, both exceeding 2000 meters in altitude, and the Mafika-Lisiu Pass, which reaches 3000 meters. The surrounding landscape features extraordinary geological formations including gorges, canyons, escarpments, and vast highland plains.Maletsunyane Falls is a significant tourist attraction, renowned for offering the world's longest commercially operated single-drop abseil, an experience exclusively managed by Semonkong Lodge. This record-breaking abseil descends 204 meters (669 feet) down the waterfall's rocky face. Beyond this adrenaline-fueled activity, visitors can engage in pony trekking, sport fishing, and guided walks through nearby traditional villages, experiencing the local Basotho culture. The area is also home to wildlife, including the endangered Bearded Vultures.
