Msambweni

Msambweni is a small fishing town and constituency located in Kwale County, southeastern Kenya. It lies approximately 55.4 kilometers south of Mombasa and 46.5 kilometers northeast of Lunga Lunga, near the Tanzanian border. The name "Msambweni" originates from the Swahili term "land of Msambwe," referring to a hardy wild fruit tree native to the area. The town's landscape is characterized by unspoiled beaches, rocky outcrops, and low cliff tops. A significant natural feature is the continuous fringing reef stretching from Msambweni northwards to Malindi, recognized as one of the world's largest.The local economy is primarily driven by fishing. Beyond fishing, the community engages in the cultivation of coconut palm, cashew nuts, and various fruits for trade, while maize, cassava, cowpeas, and rice are grown for local consumption. Other economic activities include silica sand mining, with the sand transported to Nairobi for bottle glass production, as well as beekeeping and seaweed farming. The extensive beaches and vibrant reef have fostered a growing snorkeling industry, leading to the establishment of holiday cottages and hotels in the area.Key landmarks in Msambweni include the Msambweni Level 5 Hospital, which is considered one of the best medical facilities on the Kenyan coast, and the Msambweni Campus of Kenya Medical Training College. To the north of the town is the Koromojo Dam, and the Shimba Hills National Reserve is situated between Msambweni and Kwale, offering opportunities for wildlife viewing.
