Sani Pass

Sani Pass is a legendary mountain pass located in the Mkhomazi Wilderness area, part of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg World Heritage Site, connecting KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, with the Kingdom of Lesotho. Originally established as a trade route between Mokhotlong in Lesotho and Himeville in South Africa, it is now primarily utilized by tourists and for transporting laborers between the two countries. The pass is renowned for its treacherous nature, featuring a gradient as steep as 1:4 in certain sections and poor traction, making it accessible only by high-clearance 4x4 vehicles. The journey up or down the pass can take up to four hours to cover less than six miles, depending on road conditions, which become even more hazardous after snowfall in winter.The pass is characterized by its dramatic and winding zig-zagging gravel road, with turns so challenging they have earned colorful names such as Big Wind Corner, Hemorrhoid Hill, and Suicide Bend. As one ascends, the landscape transforms from lush valleys with crystal clear waters and wildflowers to rugged peaks and sweeping horizons of the Drakensberg, part of the Great Escarpment. The area is rich in native fauna, and lucky visitors might spot a dassie, also known as a rock hyrax, which is the closest living relative of the elephant. At the summit, standing at approximately 2876 meters above sea level, visitors can find the highest pub in Africa, located opposite the customs house, offering a unique reward for completing the challenging drive.Crossing into Lesotho via Sani Pass requires a valid passport and offers a glimpse into the remote Eastern Highlands of Lesotho and the authentic Basotho culture. Guided tours often include visits to local Basotho villages, providing opportunities to interact with the hardy mountainous folk, learn about their daily lives, and observe traditional crafts. There are ongoing discussions about upgrading and tarring the road, a prospect that many locals believe would diminish the unique adventure and excitement that currently defines the Sani Pass experience.
