Pass of Guns

Sani Pass, likely referred to as "Pass of Guns," is a challenging and spectacular mountain pass located within the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It straddles the border between KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and Mokhotlong, Lesotho, serving as a historic trade route. The pass is renowned for its treacherous conditions, featuring gradients as steep as 1:4 in places and poor traction, which restricts access to only 4x4 vehicles. Depending on road conditions, traversing its less than six miles can take up to four hours, with winter snowfalls making it even more hazardous.The pass is characterized by its dramatic scenery, surrounded by the majestic Drakensberg escarpment and expansive fields of wildflowers. Its dangerous turns are famously given colorful names, such as Big Wind Corner, Hemorrhoid Hill, and Suicide Bend, reflecting the formidable nature of the drive. Upon reaching the summit, visitors are rewarded with the opportunity to visit the highest pub in Africa, situated opposite the customs house.Sani Pass is located near the Mkhomazi Wilderness Area, a remote and less explored mountainous region of KwaZulu-Natal. This area is known for its deep valleys, soaring peaks, and high-altitude wetlands. It is a biodiversity hotspot, home to various wildlife including eland, reedbuck, baboons, and rare bird species such as the bearded vulture. The broader uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park also holds significant cultural heritage, featuring numerous ancient San rock art sites.
