Mpumalanga Province

Mpumalanga Province, affectionately known as "The Place of the Rising Sun," is situated in the eastern part of South Africa, sharing international borders with Mozambique and Eswatini. The province is characterized by its diverse topography, divided by a prominent escarpment into two distinct regions: the Highveld, which experiences cold, frosty winters, and the Lowveld, known for its mild winters and subtropical climate. The capital city is Mbombela, and the province covers an area of 76,495 square kilometers, with a population of 5,143,324 as per the 2022 StatsSA Census. The linguistic landscape is rich, with SiSwati, IsiZulu, XiTsonga, Sepedi, and IsiNdebele being the principal languages spoken by its inhabitants.Agriculture forms the backbone of Mpumalanga's economy, employing 8.1% of its total workforce. The province is a significant producer of citrus fruits, with Mbombela being the second-largest citrus-producing area in South Africa, responsible for one-third of the country's orange exports. Other agricultural products include a variety of subtropical fruits such as mangoes, avocados, litchis, bananas, papayas, granadillas, and guavas, as well as nuts, vegetables, cotton, tobacco, and wheat. The Carolina-Bethal-Ermelo area is notable for sheep farming, alongside the cultivation of potatoes, sunflowers, maize, and peanuts. Beyond agriculture, Mpumalanga is rich in coal reserves, with eMalahleni recognized as Africa's largest coal producer. The province hosts South Africa's major power stations, including Kendal, which features the world's largest cooling towers, and Kusile, contributing a massive 4800 megawatts to the national grid. Manufacturing is also prominent, with large petrochemical plants in the southern Highveld, chrome-alloy and steel manufacturing in the northern Highveld, and industries focused on agricultural and forestry materials in the Lowveld.Mpumalanga is a renowned tourist destination, boasting several iconic natural attractions. It is home to a significant portion of the world-famous Kruger National Park, a vast game reserve where visitors can encounter the "Big Five" – lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos, and leopards. Other notable sites include the ancient Sudwala Caves, the majestic Three Rondavels, the panoramic viewpoint of God's Window, and the breathtaking Blyde River Canyon, one of the largest canyons in the world. These natural wonders contribute significantly to the province's appeal, offering diverse landscapes and wildlife experiences.
