Lake Langano

Lake Langano is a freshwater lake located in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia, approximately 200 to 218 kilometers south of the capital, Addis Ababa. Situated in the Great Rift Valley at an elevation of about 1,585 meters, it lies on the border between the Misraq Shewa and Arsi Zones, to the east of Lake Abijatta. The lake measures approximately 18 kilometers in length and 16 kilometers in width, covering a surface area of 230 to 305 square kilometers, with a maximum depth of 46 meters. Its catchment area spans 1,600 square kilometers, and it is drained by the Hora Kallo river, which flows into the adjacent Lake Abijatta.Uniquely among Ethiopia's freshwater lakes, Lake Langano is free of Bilharzia (schistosomiasis), making its soft brown, mineral-rich waters safe and popular for swimming and various water sports. The lake's distinctive milky tea color is attributed to its high mineral content, including sulphur, which many believe possesses healing properties. The area is a favored spot for tourists and city-dwellers, offering activities such as camping, water skiing, sailing, swimming, and sunbathing on its sandy beaches. The western shore is particularly scenic, retaining more of its natural acacia tree cover, while the eastern side has seen some deforestation, though patches of dense forest remain.Lake Langano is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including hippos (though rarely seen), monkeys, baboons, warthogs, and a wide variety of birds, making bird-watching a popular activity. The surrounding landscape is also inhabited by herding communities. Geologically, the presence of pumice stones on its shores indicates past volcanic activity in the region. The lake is part of a string of Rift Valley lakes, with nearby attractions including the alkaline Lake Abijatta, known for its flamingos, and the deep Lake Shala, characterized by sulphur hot springs and Pelican Island, which hosts colonies of great white pelicans.
