Gillmans Point

Gillman's Point is a significant landmark situated on the crater rim of Kibo, the highest volcanic cone of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It is recognized as one of the three official summit points on the mountain, alongside Stella Point and the ultimate Uhuru Peak. The altitude of Gilman's Point is approximately 5,681 meters (18,638 feet) or 5,685 meters (18,652 feet), with historical data often citing the former. Climbers who successfully reach this point are awarded an official Kilimanjaro climbing certificate, marking a substantial achievement in their ascent of Africa's highest peak.The point is named in honor of Clement Gillman, a British engineer and geographer who made significant contributions to the exploration and mapping of East Africa during his time in Tanganyika (present-day Tanzania) from 1905 to 1946. In 1921, Gillman led a British expedition to Kilimanjaro and was the first Briton to reach the Kibo crater rim. He is also credited with being the first to determine Kilimanjaro's altitude using the boiling point of water. Gillman's Point is a crucial junction where the Marangu, Rongai, and Northern Circuit routes converge on the crater rim, offering expansive views into the Kibo crater.The ascent to Gilman's Point is often considered the most arduous segment of the summit attempt, typically commencing from the Kibo Huts campsite around midnight and lasting between 6 to 8 hours.
