Himeville

Himeville is a small village nestled in the foothills of the Southern Drakensberg mountains in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Located approximately 130 km from Pietermaritzburg, it serves as a gateway to the Sani Pass, the highest pass between South Africa and Lesotho, and the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The village, covering an area of 4.34 square kilometers, is characterized by its dramatic alpine scenery, crystal clear lakes, and rivers.The region around Himeville is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The Himeville Nature Reserve, established in 1973 and spanning 104 hectares, features two dams and is home to various antelope species and birds. Nearby, the Swamp Nature Reserve protects the rare Wattled Crane. The area is renowned as a fly-fishing destination, with the Underberg-Himeville Trout Fishing Club offering access to over 160 kilometers of rivers and 60 dams. Beyond fishing, visitors can enjoy water sports such as swimming, rafting, canoeing, and tubing. There are also three golf courses in the vicinity, and the surrounding Drakensberg mountains provide ample opportunities for hiking.Historically, Himeville was named in 1902 after Sir Albert Henry Hime, a road engineer and former Prime Minister of Natal. Its origins trace back to 1890 when it was established as a police outpost to counter gun-running and cattle rustling. A significant cultural landmark is the Himeville Museum, housed in a former loop-holed fort built between 1896 and 1899, which later served as a prison until 1972. The museum, declared a National Monument in 1981, is considered one of the country's top rural museums, showcasing a wide array of exhibits from fossils and Stone Age artifacts to displays on Bushmen, early settlers, African beadwork, and military history, including the Anglo-Boer War and World Wars. The Himeville Old Residency, built in 1898, also holds historical significance as the former Magistrate's residence. The village also hosts the annual Splashy Fen Music Festival.
