Rusinga Island, Kenya's second-largest island in Lake Victoria, is an elongated landmass approximately 16 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide, covering an area of 43 square kilometers. It is situated in the eastern part of Lake Victoria at the mouth of the Winam Gulf, in the western region of Kenya. The island is connected to Mbita Point on the mainland by a modern bridge, facilitating access. The island's terrain features several low, distinct hills, with the central summit of Lunene reaching 4,790 feet. The local language is Luo, though the ancestors of the current inhabitants were Suba people who migrated from Uganda centuries ago. The island is part of Homa Bay County and has an estimated population of 36,000 people, predominantly of the Lhuo tribe and Christian faith.Rusinga Island is globally recognized for its extraordinarily rich and significant fossil beds, dating back 18 million years to the Miocene epoch. These sites have yielded thousands of fossils, including those of early primates like Proconsul, an extinct ape-like creature considered a common ancestor of humans and apes. Mary Leakey discovered the first complete skull of Proconsul here in 1948. Beyond its paleontological importance, the island offers a serene environment with clean beaches cooled by constant onshore winds, ideal for swimming and boating. The beaches are notable for their glittering black sands composed of melanite garnet, barkevikite hornblende, and magnetite. The island is also the family home and burial site of Tom Mboya, a prominent Kenyan politician assassinated in 1969, whose mausoleum serves as a significant historical landmark. The island's diverse ecosystems support a rich birdlife, with approximately 369 species, including resident and migratory birds like the malachite kingfisher, African fish eagles, and pelicans, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Visitors can engage in various activities such as fishing for Nile Perch in Lake Victoria, nature walks, hiking to scenic viewpoints, and boat tours. Cultural experiences are also a highlight, with opportunities to interact with the local Luo community, learn about their traditions, and attend the annual Rusinga Cultural Festival, which celebrates Suba culture with music, dance, film, and traditional cuisine.Despite its natural beauty and cultural richness, Rusinga Island faces significant challenges. These include a high prevalence of diseases like malaria and tuberculosis, the ongoing effects of the Corona pandemic, and environmental issues such as overfishing in Lake Victoria, the displacement of native fish species by the invasive Nile perch, and pollution. Deforestation for land reclamation and firewood has led to increased soil erosion and loss of agricultural land. Climate change has also severely impacted the island, causing reduced crop yields due to inadequate rainfall, transforming the area from a formerly forested region with good climatic conditions into a semi-arid one.
