Millot Plantations

Millot Plantations, established in 1906 by Lucien Millot, is a significant agricultural estate located in the Sambirano region on Madagascar's northwest coast, specifically in Andzavibe, Ambanja. The plantation spans nearly 1,300 hectares, with approximately 600 hectares dedicated to organic certified cocoa cultivation. The region's unique soil and climate, enriched by the Sambirano river, provide ideal conditions for traditional, chemical-free farming, fostering a rich biodiversity through dense agroforestry systems. Beyond its renowned organic cocoa, Millot Plantations also specializes in the production of various spices, such as vanilla and green peppercorns, and essential oils like ylang-ylang and vetiver.The plantation is a major employer in the area, providing livelihoods for almost 500 to 800 people, predominantly women. It actively contributes to the local community by supporting the village school, which many employees' children attend. In partnership with Valrhona, a relationship that has spanned over 30 years and saw Valrhona become a shareholder in Société Millot in 2016, Millot Plantations has implemented numerous social and environmental initiatives. These include the renovation of employee villages, the construction of a primary healthcare center offering consultations and free medication, and the launch of agroforestry projects to educate producers and diversify income, such as through pilot poultry farms. The plantation is also committed to sustainability, boasting a significantly low carbon footprint for its cocoa production.Millot Plantations offers an immersive experience for visitors, providing informative tours that engage the senses. Guests can explore the vast 15 sq km estate, taste raw cocoa beans, sample potent green peppercorns, and visit the distillery where essential oils are produced. Tours often conclude with a lunch featuring dishes prepared with plantation products, including a notable chocolate cake with vanilla cream and chocolate-flavored rum. For those wishing to extend their stay, the farmhouse offers three simple, atmospheric rooms for overnight accommodation.
