This dual cascade was not always its natural state; gold miners in the 1870s blasted the original single stream with dynamite in an attempt to access a gold-bearing reef beneath, thus creating the distinctive twin falls seen today. The name "Mac Mac" itself originates from this gold rush era, given by President Thomas Burger in the 1870s due to the many Scottish miners whose surnames began with "Mac".Visitors can experience the falls from a dedicated viewing platform situated at the precipice, offering breathtaking perspectives of the cascading water. The Mac Mac Pools, located south of the falls, provide a pleasant spot for picnics, braai (barbecue) facilities, and refreshing swims in crystal-clear mountain spring water. A 3-kilometer circular hiking trail, known as the Secretary Bird Trail, starts and finishes at the Mac Mac Pools, winding through grasslands, crags, and indigenous forest patches, offering opportunities for birdwatching.
