Lake Ruhondo

Lake Ruhondo, often referred to as one of Rwanda's "twin lakes" alongside Lake Burera, is a significant natural freshwater body nestled in the northwestern part of the country. It is situated at the base of the Karisimbi Volcanic Mountain, part of the Virunga mountain range, and lies on the outskirts of Musanze District, near Volcanoes National Park. The lake's formation is a result of ancient volcanic activity, specifically lava flows from the Muhabura volcano that blocked the northward flow of the Nyabarongo River. Lake Ruhondo is separated from Lake Burera by a narrow, approximately one-kilometer-wide strip of land, believed to be an ancient lava flow from the Sabyinyo volcano. Lake Burera, being at a higher elevation, appears to feed its waters into Lake Ruhondo. The combined area of these twin lakes is estimated to be around 2800 hectares, with Lake Ruhondo itself spanning about 5.4 square kilometers. The lake is characterized by its pristine, deep blue waters, surrounded by steep, well-terraced hills and lush green vegetation, offering magnificent scenic views, especially on clear days. It is approximately a 30-minute drive from Musanze town.Lake Ruhondo is renowned as a birding paradise, attracting bird lovers with a diverse array of species. Common sightings include the African Crown Crane, Hadada Ibis, Black Sawwing, Weaver, African Fish Eagle, Cormorant, Sacred Ibis, Yellow-billed ducks, and Yellow-billed Storks. Rarer species like the Rwenzori batis, Rwenzori Apalis, handsome francolin, Red-faced woodland warbler, and Rwenzori turaco can also be observed. The lake's waters are considered safe for human use as they are free of dangerous predators such as crocodiles. Activities available to visitors include boat trips and canoeing, which offer unique perspectives of the Virunga Mountains, surrounding landscapes, and various small islands like Bushongo, Munanira, Bishosho, and Cuza. Fishing, primarily for tilapia using local methods, is also a popular activity, with opportunities for sports fishing as well.Beyond aquatic activities, the area around Lake Ruhondo provides ample opportunities for nature and cultural immersion. Visitors can engage in nature walks and community tours, allowing for interaction with the hospitable local Rwandan communities. These interactions often include experiencing traditional dances and songs, visiting local farms, and learning about the indigenous way of life. Biking and cycling tours through Musanze villages and the scenic landscape are also popular, as are hikes up the surrounding hills for breathtaking panoramic views of the lake and its volcanic backdrop. The lake also serves as a means of transport for local goods using traditional sampans. The close proximity to Volcanoes National Park makes Lake Ruhondo an excellent complementary destination for those visiting for gorilla trekking or golden monkey treks.
