Lake Burera

Lake Burera, also known as Bulera, is a prominent natural feature located in the Northern Province of Rwanda, bordering Uganda on the southern slopes of Mount Muhavura. Situated to the east of its twin, Lake Ruhondo, and the city of Musanze, Lake Burera is a deep blue body of water surrounded by steep hills and impressive waterfalls, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Virunga volcanic mountains, including Gahinga, Muhabura, and Sabyinyo. The lake was formed as a result of ancient volcanic activity, where lava flows from Mount Muhabura blocked the northward course of the Nyabarongo River. It is separated from Lake Ruhondo by a narrow, approximately 1-kilometer-wide strip of land, believed to be an ancient lava flow from the extinct Sabyinyo volcano. Lake Burera lies at a higher altitude than Lake Ruhondo, with a significant elevation difference of about 100 to 150 meters, which has been harnessed for hydroelectric power generation at the Ntaruka plant, supplying electricity to Kigali. With an area of 55 square kilometers, it is the second largest lake entirely within Rwanda and features several islands, such as Bihosho, Birwa I, Cyuza, Munanira, Bushongo, and Mudimba, some of which are inhabited.The area around Lake Burera offers a variety of activities for visitors, often combined with gorilla trekking safaris in the nearby Volcanoes National Park. Popular activities include boat trips on the lake, which provide opportunities to admire the majestic Virunga mountains, terraced hills, and lush rainforests, as well as to visit the islands. Nature walks and biking tours are also available, allowing for exploration of the scenic landscape and interaction with local communities. Bird watching is a significant draw, with species like kingfishers, cormorants, darters, hammerkops, storks, cranes, African Crown Crane, Hadada Ibis, and various other rare birds inhabiting the vicinity. The lake is also a site for game fishing, where visitors can learn traditional fishing methods or use their own gear. Community tours offer insights into the local way of life, including farm visits and traditional music and dance performances. The waters are noted to be free of bilharzia and crocodiles, making swimming a possibility for experienced individuals, given the lake's depth of approximately 180 meters.Lake Burera and its surroundings are not only a natural wonder but also hold cultural and economic importance for the local population, serving as vital fishing grounds.
