Sua Pan, also known as Sowa Pan, is a vast natural topographic depression located in the Makgadikgadi region of northeastern Botswana. It forms part of the larger Makgadikgadi Pans complex, one of the world's most extensive salt pan systems, spanning approximately 24,000 square kilometers. The name "Sowa" aptly means "salt" in the language of the local San people. This immense pan is a remnant of the ancient Lake Makgadikgadi, which began receding around 10,000 years ago, leaving behind the stark, shimmering salt flats seen today. It was first documented for the European world by explorer David Livingstone.Sua Pan is a seasonal lake, undergoing a dramatic transformation with the annual rains. From December to April or May, the pan fills with shallow water, fed primarily by the Nata River, which creates a brackish delta of silted reedbeds in the northeast. During this wet season, the pan becomes a vibrant ecosystem, attracting tens of thousands of migratory birds, including greater and lesser flamingos, pelicans, ducks, and teals, which travel from distant areas like Etosha, Namibia, and East Africa to breed and feed on the abundant algae and tiny aquatic creatures. In the dry season, it reverts to a seemingly endless expanse of blindingly white salt, where heat mirages are common. The pan's brines are rich in various salts, including sodium chloride, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium sulfate, and minor amounts of potassium chloride.Geological and archaeological features within Sua Pan offer insights into its ancient past. Kubu Island and Kukome Island are notable granite outcrops rising from the pan, featuring fossil pebble beaches and Stone Age tools, evidence of early human habitation when the area was a large, year-round lake. An escarpment near the village of Mosu also rises 40 meters above the pan's edge, showcasing the erosive power of the ancient lake. Beyond its natural beauty, Sua Pan is also a site of significant industrial activity. The Botash Company, partly owned by the Botswana government, operates a large-scale mining operation extracting sodium carbonate (soda ash) and salt from the pan's brines, producing hundreds of thousands of tonnes annually. Additionally, companies like Aterian PLC are engaged in lithium brine exploration within the pan.
