Praslin

Praslin is the second-largest island in the Inner Seychelles, located approximately 37 to 44 kilometers northeast of Mahé. Originally named “Île des Palmes” by explorer Lazare Picault in 1744, it was later renamed Praslin in 1768 in honor of French diplomat César Gabriel de Choiseul, duc de Praslin. The island spans about 38.5 square kilometers and has a population of around 7,533 to 8,000 inhabitants, divided into two administrative districts: Baie Sainte Anne and Grand' Anse. The main settlements include Baie Ste Anne, Anse Volbert, and Grand' Anse. Historically, Praslin was used as a hideaway by pirates and Arab merchants.The island is renowned for its stunning beaches, such as Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette, which are frequently ranked among the world's most beautiful. Praslin features gently rising hills, with its highest point, Fond Azore, reaching 367 meters. The terrain is characterized by lush green forests, takamaka and palm groves, and picturesque bays. A significant portion of the island is covered by the Praslin National Park, established in 1979, which encompasses the UNESCO World Heritage site of Vallée de Mai. This reserve is famous for being the natural habitat of the endemic Coco de Mer palm, which produces the world's largest seed, weighing up to 29 kg and taking seven years to ripen. The Vallée de Mai is also home to rare bird species like the Seychelles black parrot and the Seychelles bulbul.Beyond its natural beauty, Praslin offers various activities, including snorkeling, diving, and golfing at the Seychelles' only 18-hole championship golf course. Day trips to nearby islands like Curieuse Island are popular, where visitors can see Aldabra Giant Tortoises in a protected reserve. The island's main tourist hubs, Anse Volbert (Côte d'Or) and Grand Anse, provide a selection of accommodation, restaurants, and shops, maintaining a laid-back charm.
