Thyolo District

Thyolo District is located in the Southern Region of Malawi, situated on the Shire Highlands. It shares borders with Mulanje to the east, Blantyre to the north, and Nsanje to the south. The district covers an area of approximately 1,715 square kilometers and had a population of 458,976 according to the 2018 Census, with a projected population of 782,442 in 2023. The administrative capital is Thyolo town. The terrain is generally transverse and sloppy, characterized by mountains and rivers, with loam clay and some rocky soils. The climate is a dry savanna type, receiving an average annual rainfall of 1,125 mm.The economy of Thyolo District is primarily agro-based, with tea being the main cash crop cultivated in commercial farms. The landscape is notably scenic, covered with neatly manicured tea bushes, and the district was established in 1908. Beyond tea, main food crops include maize, groundnuts, beans, soya beans, pigeon peas, and other pulses. The seasonal temperatures also support the growth of horticultural crops such as pineapples and bananas, which are exported to other districts within Malawi. The district is home to several tea estates that offer activities like tea tasting, hiking, and mountain biking, and it is also recognized as a haven for birdwatchers.Demographically, the population is largely composed of the Lomwe ethnic group (50.2%) and the Mang'anja (12.3%). The district faces significant environmental challenges, including widespread deforestation, river siltation, soil erosion, reduced water levels in rivers, and a loss of biodiversity. These issues are often attributed to factors such as poverty, high population growth, and unsustainable practices like wanton tree cutting and cultivation in water catchment areas. Efforts are being made to address these problems through initiatives like quarterly flow measures by the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Development in conjunction with the Thyolo District Council.
