Katesh

Katesh is a town situated in northern Tanzania, specifically within the Hanang District of the Manyara Region. It serves as a significant point along the paved trunk road T14, which connects Singida to Babati and further to Arusha, making it a transit hub in the area. According to the 2012 census, the Katesh ward had a population of 8,774 residents. The town's geographical coordinates are approximately 4°31′22″S latitude and 35°23′19″E longitude.A primary natural feature and attraction near Katesh is Mount Hanang, one of Tanzania's highest mountains, standing just under 12,000 feet. Mount Hanang is designated as its own national park, notable for having largely avoided the extensive deforestation seen in other parts of Tanzania. The mountain is home to a diverse array of birdlife, including house martens and various migratory species, with hawks frequently observed hunting in the thermals above its slopes. Climbing Mount Hanang is a popular activity, typically taking between 7 to 10 hours depending on fitness levels. A permit, costing USD 12 as of 2018, is required and can be obtained through a process involving the local bank and tourism office in Katesh, which may take a day or two and is not possible on Sundays. While a guide is recommended, the well-worn path makes it navigable for independent climbers, and local guides are readily available in town. A park fee of TSh 2,500 is also applicable.Katesh experiences a tropical monsoon climate. The town receives an average of 654mm of rainfall annually over approximately 50 rainy days, with January being the wettest month and August the driest. Snowfall is a rare occurrence. The period between September and October is generally considered the best time to visit for favorable weather, characterized by warm temperatures and minimal rainfall.
